Chinese shares close higher Tuesday

BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed higher on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 1.36 percent to 3,916.33 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.06 percent higher at 13,077.32 points.

The combined turnover of these two indices stood at 1.87 trillion yuan (about 263.64 billion U.S. dollars), up from 1.74 trillion yuan the previous trading day.

The glass, petroleum and machinery sectors spearheaded market gains, while shares in the coal and e-commerce industries suffered losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 3.02 percent to close at 3,083.72 points.
