BEIJING - China's Wang Chuqin celebrated three victories at the World Table Tennis (WTT) China Smash on Wednesday, overcoming his biggest challenge in the men's singles second round.

In his first encounter with Poland's Milosz Redzimski, the top-seeded Wang built a two-game lead, winning 11-7, 11-4. However, Redzimski bounced back strongly, prevailing 12-10, 11-8 to force a deciding game.

After trailing 4-2 in the fifth game, Wang reeled off three consecutive points to move ahead 8-5. Redzimski cut the deficit to one point at 9-8, but amid loud home support, Wang held firm to close out an 11-8 victory, avoiding another round-of-32 exit after last year's early defeat.

"I got a lucky win," Wang reflected. "I need to summarize gains and losses in the third, fourth and fifth games to better prepare for the upcoming matches."

"Right now, I'm really sad because I had a really good chance to beat the world No 1," Redzimski said. "Maybe after a while I will say that I'm happy that I'm able to compete at this level, to almost beat Wang Chuqin, but I always want to win, so I'm sad about it."

Later on Wednesday, Wang and Lin Shidong defeated Sweden's 2021 world champions Mattias Falck and Kristian Karlsson 11-8, 11-5, 11-5 to reach the men's doubles quarterfinals.

"Compared to the Singapore Smash, we had more communication and better chemistry this time," Lin said.

Other advancing Chinese men's pairs are Zhou Qihao and Chen Junsong, Yuan Licen and Xu Yingbin, and Huang Youzheng and Wen Ruibo.

In his third match of the day, Wang partnered Sun Yingsha to outplay compatriots Chen Yuanyu and Kuai Man 11-4, 11-9, 11-5, securing a spot in the mixed doubles semifinals. The Olympic champions will face Brazil's Hugo Calderano and Bruna Takahashi for a place in the final.

"We approached this match with a challenger's mindset. Wang did very well. After all, it was his third match today. He had a quick start and found a good feeling in this match. For me, I just did my part and let him score most of the points," Sun said.

Seventh-seeded Frenchman Felix Lebrun clawed back from a 2-1 deficit and saved a match point to edge host player Chen Yuanyu in an 11-3, 4-11, 5-11, 11-8, 12-10 nail-biter.

"It has been amazing since the beginning of the tournament, especially with this five-game match. I will prepare the best I can and try to go further in the tournament," Lebrun said.

On the women's side, China's Wang Manyu, Kuai Man and Shi Xunyao all progressed with straight-game victories.

Two other Chinese pairs, Wang Xiaotong and Xu Yi, and Chen Xingtong and Qian Tianyi, also advanced to the last eight.

In mixed doubles, Huang Youzheng and Chen Yi overcame Japan's second seeds Sora Matsushima and Miwa Harimoto 3-0 (11-5, 13-11, 11-7), while Yuan Licen and Wang Yidi overpowered Sweden's Kristian Karlsson and Christina Kallberg in straight games.
