The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) has announced that it will issue the Standby Signal No. 1 on Wednesday morning when tropical cyclone Podul is expected to enter within 800 kilometers of the city.
Hot weather will persist across Guangdong on Wednesday due to the outer subsiding air of Podul. However, heat-induced showers are likely to develop later in the day, affecting the region, the HKO said in a weather bulletin at noon on Tuesday.
Locally, temperatures over parts of Hong Kong’s New Territories rose to about 33 degrees Celsius around noon, according to the forecaster.
Podul is forecast to make landfall between eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian on Thursday.
“There will be squally heavy showers and thunderstorms occasionally on Thursday over the territory. There will be swells,” reads the bulletin.
The observatory will assess the need to issue higher tropical cyclone warning signals between late Wednesday and early Thursday, depending on Podul’s path, intensity, and its distance from the Pearl River Estuary, as well as changes in local wind conditions.
