GAZA / RAMALLAH - At least 58 Palestinians were killed by Israeli airstrikes and gunfire across the Gaza Strip on Sunday, Palestinian sources said.

Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for the Civil Defense in Gaza, told Xinhua that at least 15 people, including a doctor and a child, were killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting a crowded market in central Gaza City.

Basal added that 11 people, including a girl, were killed in separate Israeli airstrikes on the al-Shati refugee camp, and the neighborhoods of Tal al-Hawa, al-Zeitoun, and al-Sabra in Gaza City.

Israeli drones attacked a water distribution point in al-Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip, according to eyewitnesses. In a press statement, Al-Awda Hospital said the bombing resulted in 10 deaths, including children, and 16 wounded.

The hospital recorded another 10 deaths from a separate Israeli airstrike targeting a residential house in the same refugee camp, according to the statement.

In the south, eight people were killed in the city of Khan Younis, Nasser Medical Complex said, noting that another four were killed by Israeli army fire outside the US-backed aid center in the Shakoush area, north of Rafah.

For its part, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement on Sunday that it struck more than 150 "terror targets" throughout the Gaza Strip over the past day, including "terrorists" and their infrastructure sites.

Raafat al-Majdulai, director of al-Awda Health and Community Association, warned that the health system in the Gaza Strip is facing a catastrophe and a humanitarian crisis, noting that Gaza's hospitals are providing the bare minimum of services and are unable to deal with the wounded.

In the southern Gaza Strip, the Kuwait Specialized Field Hospital announced that it was running out of fuel, with current supplies insufficient to operate the hospital for more than two days.

The hospital said in a statement that the hospital's shutdown would threaten the lives of thousands of patients and wounded, especially in al-Mawasi area, which is crowded with approximately 700,000 displaced people.

On March 18, Israel resumed its military operations in the enclave. At least 7,450 Palestinians have been killed and 26,479 others injured since Israel renewed its intensive strikes, bringing the total death toll since October 2023 to 58,026, and injuries to 138,520, Gaza-based health authorities said on Sunday.

'Full Israeli withdrawal'

Also on Sunday, Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) said that the ongoing indirect negotiations with Israel must lead to an end to the war, full Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, opening of the crossings, and reconstruction.

The remarks came during a meeting between the leaders of the two movements, the location of which was not specified, according to a statement released by Hamas.

The Hamas delegation was headed by Muhammad Darwish, head of Hamas' Shura Council, while Secretary-General Ziyad al-Nakhalah headed the PIJ delegation.

"The two factions discussed developments in the ongoing negotiations through international mediators and the Israeli side's responses to the proposals presented to reach a ceasefire agreement," the statement said.

The statement emphasized that any potential agreement must fulfill Palestinian aspirations, including ending the war, which has caused human suffering and heavy casualties among civilians.

The indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas in the Qatari capital Doha are entering a "critical and complex phase," according to a Hamas source, who warned that Israel's "intransigence" could lead to the collapse of the talks.

The Hamas source said that the two delegations reviewed the Israeli responses, noting that the main obstacle to progress in the talks lies in Israel's "intransigence regarding the withdrawal maps."

He added that what is required is a preliminary withdrawal of Israeli forces to the January lines, with a guarantee of a full withdrawal from the Gaza Strip after the negotiation process.

Mahmoud Abbas' call

Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday called on Hamas to hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority (PA).

During his meeting with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair in the Jordanian capital Amman, Abbas said that "Hamas will not rule Gaza in the post-war era," the Palestinian official news agency WAFA reported.

He stressed that the only viable solution for the Gaza Strip is Israel's complete withdrawal from the strip and the empowerment of the State of Palestine to assume its responsibilities with Arab and international support.

WAFA said the meeting addressed the latest developments in the Palestinian territories, as well as political and humanitarian developments related to the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.
