MTR Corp wins top honors at international transport summit

MTR received the prestigious UITP Award in the Operational Excellence category for effectively managing passenger flow through the MTR network during mega events to ensure safe, smooth and efficient operations. (PROVIDED TO CHINA DAILY)

The MTR Corporation received honors at the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) Summit 2025, held in Hamburg, Germany. The recognition underscores the Hong Kong subway operator’s commitment to maintaining world-class service reliability while successfully integrating sustainable initiatives.

As the recipient of the Operational Excellence award, the most competitive category at the summit, MTR’s “Future Ready Transit Operations: A Trilogy to Operations Preparedness” project showcases how the MTR makes use of technology to plan and manage passenger flow through the MTR network during mega events at Kai Tak Sports Park. With the Ridership Prediction Model and the Intelligent Crowd Diversion System, the MTR maintains seamless travel and resilient service capacity during events, where the MTR served as the primary transportation system for up to 65,000 attendees.

The MTR • Care App received special recognition in the design category, aiding passengers with special needs through technology-enabled features like Trip Planner, In-station Navigation, and Wheelchair Ramp Booking.

These recognitions mark the MTR’s second consecutive win after receiving an Award in Technological Innovation category in 2023 for its smart mobility solutions and inclusive initiatives. “The MTR’s two consecutive UITP  Awards are a testament to our industrious efforts and reflect the corporation’s significant achievements in promoting innovation and inclusive mobility under our corporate strategy: Transforming the Future,” said Jacob Kam, Chief Executive Officer of MTR Corporation.

In addition to receiving honors, Jeny Yeung, Managing Director - Hong Kong Transport Services of MTR Corporation, was invited to share insights and experiences on integrating sustainability into corporate strategy. The company also set up an exhibition booth themed “Keep Cities Moving Sustainably”, showcasing its strategies for driving sustainability in support of both the company’s growth and the cities it serves.

Meanwhile, the company was  invited to host an Innovation Guided Tour, further contributing to the exploration of innovative solutions in public transport by spotlighting the MTR Mobile App, the pioneering all-in-one digital platform that integrates mobility, rewards, and lifestyle services.
