BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed lower on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.44 percent to 3,384.82 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.86 percent lower at 10,162.18 points.
The combined turnover of these two indices stood at 1.42 trillion yuan (about $197.7 billion), up from 1.29 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.
Shares in ports and shipping as well as beauty care led the gains, while those in the military industry and semiconductor sector were among the biggest losers.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 1.17 percent to close at 2,037.27 points on Tuesday.
