Major HK service industries see Q3 incomes rise

HONG KONG – Many major service industries in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region recorded year-on-year income increases in the third quarter of 2024, official data showed Monday.

Double-digit increases were recorded in business receipts indices of the transportation (+17.3 percent), financing (+13.7 percent) and insurance (+11.7 percent) industries, according to data from the Census and Statistics Department.

Analyzed by service domain, the business receipts index of the computer and information technology services domain increased by 34.4 percent year-on-year during the same period, while that of the tourism, convention and exhibition services domain decreased by 5.3 percent year-on-year.

An HKSAR government spokesman said that business receipts of many service industries continued to increase in the third quarter over a year earlier.

Looking ahead, business of the service industries as a whole should continue to expand, the spokesman added.

He said the Chinese mainland's various measures to boost the economy and the initiatives in the 2024 Policy Address that inject new impetus to the Hong Kong economy, will benefit various service industries, though some of them may be more affected by increased global economic uncertainties and escalation of trade conflicts.
