Hong Kong experiences warmest October on record

Hong Kong experienced its warmest October last month with the monthly mean maximum temperature in the city reaching over 30 degrees Celsius, according to the Hong Kong Observatory

The observatory said that the weather was warmer than usual mainly due to the weaker northeast monsoon over southern China while the city also experienced only about 9 percent of the normal rainfall for the month.   

It said the monthly mean maximum temperature of 30.3°C, monthly mean temperature of 27.3°C and monthly mean minimum temperature of 25.4°C were 2.2 degrees, 1.6 degrees and 1.5 degrees respectively above normal and “all of them were the highest on record for October”.

There were also three very hot days last month, one of the highest on record for October, the observatory added.

Last month was also much drier than usual with a total rainfall of 11.3 millimeters, only about 9 percent of the normal figure of 120.3 millimeters.

Since the beginning of the year up to October, the accumulated rainfall was 2,115.6 millimeters, or about 10 percent lower than the normal figure of 2,363.1 millimeters for the same period, the observatory said.

On the afternoon of Oct 1, temperatures at the observatory soared to a maximum of 34.2°C, the highest of the month and also the third-highest absolute maximum temperature for October in the territory.

Moreover, the daily mean temperature of 30.9°C that day was also the highest on record for October, the observatory added.
