New Zealand artist Lisa Reihana's multimedia installation "DigiRadiance:GOLD_LEAD_WOOD_COAL" will be on display from Saturday at Tai Kwun in Hong Kong.
The installation is based on a fictional work centering the story of SS Ventnor, a cargo steamship that was wrecked off New Zealand's North Island in 1902 while carrying hundreds of remains of Chinese gold diggers who were set to be repatriated to China. After the sinking, those bodies were gathered by nearby Māori inhabitants and later buried according to local customs.
Taking this tragedy as a starting point in her speculative tale, Reihana explores questions around foreign labor, longing, and displacement.
China Daily's Adam Lam took the photos at a preview session on Friday.
