The cast of the acclaimed musical I Am What I Am (雄狮少年) hosted a meet-and-greet in Guangzhou on Thursday, where they performed signature songs, shared behind-the-scenes insights and discussed their journey bringing the story of an underdog boy’s dream to life.

The event precedes the production’s highly anticipated return to Guangzhou Opera House from March 20 to 23.

Adapted from the eponymous comic, I Am What I Am focuses on the struggles of a frail rural boy who dedicates himself to mastering lion dance — a cornerstone of Lingnan culture — to overcome adversity.

Since its 2024 premiere in Guangzhou, the production has swept across more than 10 cities — including Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Shanghai — garnering multiple accolades. Critics praise its fusion of traditional lion dance rhythms with modern musical genres, including rock, folk, and flamenco, creating a "sonic tapestry that elevates the protagonist’s journey from struggle to triumph."
