COLOMBO — Harini Amarasuriya, a member of parliament from the National People's Power (NPP), was sworn in as the new Sri Lankan prime minister on Tuesday, a day after Anura Kumara Dissanayake was sworn in as the ninth executive president of the country.

Amarasuriya was sworn in before Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, becoming the third female prime minister in Sri Lankan history.

She also took oaths as the minister of Justice, Education, Labor, Industries, Science and Technology, Health, and Investments, said reports of local media.

NPP Secretary Nihal Abeysinghe said that all members of the cabinet will be sworn in by Tuesday evening, adding that the cabinet of ministers will be limited to four, including the president.

Dinesh Gunawardena resigned as prime minister on Monday following Dissanayake's election as the country's new president.

Meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) expressed its eagerness to collaborate with Dissanayake.

"We look forward to working closely with President Dissanayake and his administration to build on the significant progress made, which has helped steer Sri Lanka toward economic recovery after one of its worst financial crises in 2022," said an IMF spokesperson in a statement.

The IMF said it welcomed the announcement of an agreement in principle between Sri Lanka and international bondholders' representatives, subject to confirmation on comparability of treatment by Sri Lanka's Official Creditors Committee.

The IMF also noted that it plans to discuss the timing of the third review of Sri Lanka's IMF-supported program with the new president as soon as practicable.
