Hong Kong athlete John Loung on Monday won the city’s first gold medal in the Paris Paralympics, bowling his way to victory in the men's boccia individual BC1 final event.
The 38-year-old athlete defeated South Korea’s Jung Sung-joon 4-1 to grab the top prize.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu expressed his heartfelt congratulations to Loung and his coaches. “John Loung demonstrated unwavering determination and superb skills in the competition, claiming the first gold medal for the Hong Kong, China Delegation at this year's Paralympic Games.”

Saying that his gold medal is well-deserved, the CE said, “All Hong Kong people and I are thrilled and proud of his outstanding performance.”
The Hong Kong, China Delegation's medal tally also includes a silver medal won by swimmer Chan Yui-lam in the Women's 100m Butterfly S14 event and a bronze claimed by another swimmer, Ng Cheuk-yan, in the Women's 100m Breaststroke SB6 event.
Meanwhile, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung Yun-hung and Non-official Members of the Executive Council also congratulated Loung on winning the gold medal.

“With perseverance and a strong spirit, John Loung has won the gold medal and demonstrated his sportsmanship. We are all deeply encouraged by his remarkable achievement," said Yeung.
Regina Ip, convenor of ExCo Non-official Members, said, "With his great strategy and outstanding skills, John Loung outperformed his rivals in the match and scored the first gold medal for Hong Kong in this year's Paralympic Games. We are proud of his remarkable achievement."
