Ng Cheuk-yan secures HK’s second medal at Paris Paralympics

HONG KONG – Hong Kong’s youngest-ever paralympian on Sunday bagged the city’s second medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.

Swimmer Ng Cheuk-yan won the bronze medal in the Women’s 100m Breaststroke SB6 event held at the Paris La Defense Arena.

Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu and Secretary for Culture, Sports & Tourism Kevin Yeung Yun-hung hailed Ng for her excellent performance.

Lee said she demonstrated superb swimming skills and great perseverance in the competition, achieving remarkable results in her first appearance at the Paralympic Games and winning a bronze medal.

“All Hong Kong people and I are proud of her excellent performance,” Lee said.

Yeung also lauded the Hong Kong swimmer for her achievement and distinguished performance.

“Ng Cheuk-yan outcompeted her opponents with perseverance and distinguished performance. We are so proud of her,” he said.

Ng had won a bronze medal in the Women’s 100m Backstroke S6 event at the 4th Asian Para Games Hangzhou, and a silver medal in the Women’s 100m Breaststroke SB6 event at the Para Swimming World Championships last year.

Non-official Members of the Executive Council also expressed their warmest congratulations to Ng and their heartfelt gratitude to Ng's coaches and the Hong Kong, China delegation's swimming team.

"Ng Cheuk-yan demonstrated great perseverance at such a young age. With her excellent skills, she made her debut at the Paralympic Games marvellously and achieved an encouraging result by winning a bronze medal for Hong Kong," said Convenor of ExCo Non-official Members Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee.

Swimmer Chan Yui-lam earlier brought the city's first Paris Paralympics medal with a silver in the women’s S14 100m butterfly.

The Paris Paralympics takes place from Aug 28 to Sept 8, with 22 events being held and approximately 4,400 athletes from around the world participating.

This year, Hong Kong sent 23 athletes to compete in eight major events, including badminton, table tennis, wheelchair fencing, archery, swimming, athletics, and equestrian. At the Tokyo Paralympics, the city won two silver and three bronze medals.
