Connecting cultures and transforming lives, the China-Laos Railway leads path to progress

The 1,035-kilometer China-Laos Railway stands as a modern marvel of connectivity and progress, forging a path from Kunming in China’s Yunnan province to the Laotian capital of Vientiane. Since beginning operations in December 2021 and providing cross-border passenger service four months later, the railway has witnessed a surge in passenger and freight volume.

It transformed the landscape of travel and trade across the regions along its route, creating employment opportunities for multiple local communities. With enhanced supplies of goods and services, local residents have enjoyed better access to education, family connections, medical care, and tourism options.

The relocation projects for the affected Laotian villagers turned out to be a chance to improve locals’ living standards. In four relocation villages, 349 households found new beginnings in modern homes equipped with lighting and digital television, and public facilities that included village offices, schools and health centers.
