Lithuania issues diplomatic note to Russia following embassy incident in Moscow

VILNIUS - Lithuania's Foreign Ministry has issued a diplomatic note to Russia, describing a recent incident in Moscow as "an attack" after paint was smeared on the Lithuanian Embassy's wall, the Ministry said on Monday.

Four masked individuals smeared paint on the entrance of the embassy in the early hours of Monday. According to the Ministry, the Russian Federation police officers assigned to guard the embassy did not react to the attack, and the police who were called arrived more than half an hour later.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania has summoned Andrey Gasyuk, a counselor at the Russian Embassy in Vilnius, in connection with the attack and has handed him a note of strong protest, the ministry said.

The Ministry has requested that the Russian Federation take all necessary measures to ensure the protection and inviolability of the embassy's premises and property, investigate the act of vandalism, and hold those responsible accountable, the Ministry said.

According to the Russian state news agency, officers are now stationed at the embassy.
