Hong Kong's exports rise nearly 10%

HONG KONG – The volume of Hong Kong's total exports of goods and imports of goods increased by 9.8 percent and 5.9 percent in May this year, respectively, over the same period in 2023, government data showed on Tuesday.

Comparing the first five months of 2024 with the same period in 2023, the volume of the city’s total exports of goods and imports of goods rose by 7.8 percent and 3.2 percent, respectively, according to external merchandise trade data released by the Census and Statistics Department.

As per trade statistics in value terms for May released earlier, the value of Hong Kong’s total exports increased to HK$375.9 billion, up 14.8 percent year-on-year, while the value of imports of goods rose 9.6 percent to HK$388.1 billion.

Comparing the three-month period ending May 2024 with the preceding three months on a seasonally adjusted basis, the volume of total exports of goods increased by 0.9 percent, while the volume of imports of goods decreased by 1.9 percent, data showed on Tuesday.

Regarding price changes in the first five months of this year over the same period in 2023, the prices of total exports of goods and imports of goods increased by 4.3 percent and 4.1 percent, respectively

Comparing May 2024 with May 2023, the prices of total exports of goods and imports of goods increased by 4.5 percent and 3.4 percent, respectively.

Year-on-year, increases were recorded in May for the total export volume to Vietnam (31.2 percent), the United States (21.3 percent) and the Chinese mainland (15.8 percent). On the other hand, the total export volume to Taiwan and India decreased by 2.6 percent and 14.3 percent, respectively.

Over the same period of comparison, export prices to the mainland (6.5 percent), the US (5.9 percent), Taiwan (4.9 percent) and Vietnam (0.6 percent) increased. On the other hand, the total export prices to India decreased by 1.2 percent.

Comparing May 2024 with May 2023, increases were recorded for the import volume from Korea (48.6 percent), Singapore (25.5 percent) and the mainland (5.8 percent), while import volume from Japan and Taiwan decreased by 1.0 percent and 7.2 percent, respectively.

Import prices from Singapore (6.7 percent), Korea (6.3 percent), the mainland (3.6 percent) and Taiwan (2.9 percent) increased over the same period of comparison. On the other hand, the import prices from Japan decreased by 0.1 percent.
