BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed higher on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.08 percent to 2,976.3 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.86 percent higher at 8,877.02 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 640.69 billion yuan (about $89.82 billion), up from 602.16 billion yuan recorded on the previous trading day.

Stocks related to automobile led the gains, while those related to piano manufacturing reported heavy losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.39 percent to close at 1,696.34 points Tuesday.
