OSLO - Norwegian King Harald V had a pacemaker implanted at a hospital in Malaysia on Saturday, the Royal House of Norway said in a press release.

"The king has today had a temporary pacemaker implanted at the Sultanah Maliha Hospital in Langkawi. The medical transportation to Norway is likely to take place within the next couple of days," said the Royal House.

"The pacemaker was implanted due to a low heart rate. The decision was made earlier today, and the procedure was successful," said the king's personal physician Bjorn Bendz in the release.

The king is doing well under the circumstances, but still needs rest. The procedure will make the return back home safer, he added.

The 87-year-old Harald V is on a private trip to Malaysia. He was hospitalized due to an infection on Tuesday.

On Friday, the Royal House said the king is still recovering and will be in hospital for a few more days for treatment and rest, before returning home.
