Hong Kong clinched two silver medals — one in squash and one in esports — on Saturday at the 19th Asian Games, with the latter the city’s first-ever esports medal at the competition.

The special administrative region’s athletes have secured medals on seven consecutive days since proceedings got underway in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province on Sept 23.

On Friday, Hong Kong men’s squash team won a bronze medal. With the conclusion of the team events, the players will shift their focus to the singles and doubles events

Those achievements lift Hong Kong’s medal tally to 38, fourth among all competing regions, with five gold, 15 silver, and 18 bronze medals.

In Saturday’s final of the Dream Three Kingdoms 2 esports event, Hong Kong was beaten 2-0 by the national team. 

The esports competition is being contested at the Asian Games for the first time this year.

On Saturday afternoon, Hong Kong women’s squash team was unable to defend the gold it had won in the 2018 Asian Games, when it lost 2-1 to Malaysia and had to be content with a silver medal.

On Friday, Hong Kong men’s squash team won a bronze medal. With the conclusion of the team events, the players will shift their focus to the singles and doubles events. 

Golfer Kho Tai-chi delivered an exceptional performance in the men’s individual competition on Saturday, securing top spot and advancing to Sunday’s final.

In addition, under Kho’s leadership, the Hong Kong men’s team finished third, securing their spot in the final that will also take place on Sunday. 

No Hong Kong golfers have ever won a medal of any description in Asian Games history. Sunday’s individual and team finals offer a remarkable opportunity for competitors from the city to change that record.

In the men’s kayak singles 1,000m semifinal, Hong Kong’s Cheung Tsz-chung finished third to qualify for Monday morning’s final.

In the first round of the women’s 100-meter hurdles, Lui Lai-yiu set a personal best time of 13.24 seconds to secure her spot in Sunday evening’s final.

Lui made history at the 2018 Asian Games when she became the first female hurdler from Hong Kong to claim a podium finish, winning the bronze medal.

In the table tennis men’s doubles quarterfinals, Hong Kong’s Ho Kwan-kit and Wong Chun-ting were beaten 3-0 by Chinese stars Fan Zhendong and Wang Chuqin.
