Trillions plowed into digitalization

Information technology spending by enterprises shifting to the cloud will swell to nearly $1.8 trillion in 2025, a leading research firm estimated.

This year, such spending will be more than $1.3 trillion, according to Gartner Inc, whose research revenues exceeded $1 billion in the quarter ended December 2021.

In Hong Kong, the government has embraced digital transformation to help improve public services. The Next Generation Government Cloud Platform and Big Data Analytics Platform, began in September 2020, allowing for the exchange of data between bureaux and departments. This has enabled more than 340 digital government services and over 15 projects involving big data analytics. 

More than 190 commonly used online services can be accessed through the platform, while the personalized digital services platform iAM Smart, which became operational in December 2020, had logged 1.1 million-plus users as of February 2022.

A mobile application for mountain rescue joint operations and an electronic driver’s license are among the new projects proposed. Funding for such projects falls within the HK$1.51 billion ($193.20 million), split into HK$342 million for hardware and HK$184 million for software, estimated for 2022-23 by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, under the Capital Works Reserve Fund.
