Fugitive Law's deeds expose US hypocrisy on democracy

HONG KONG - The US invitation for Hong Kong fugitive Nathan Law Kwun-chung at the two-day virtual event speaks of US double standards on democracy and its disregard of rule of law and interests of most residents in the special administrative region, according to analysts.

His participation in the event and previous activities have been widely denounced by the Hong Kong communities as undermining the Hong Kong SAR and the nation.

The only reason for the US to invite Law to speak at the Democracy Summit is that it intends to cultivate an “international spokesperson” to vilify Hong Kong’s democratic development and the “one country, two systems” policy.

He is only a puppet manipulated by the US and will be tossed aside at any time if he is no longer useful.

2020-21

Law repeatedly smeared the National Security Law for Hong Kong and the “one country, two systems” principle during hearings held by the US Congress and Canadian Parliament, and also on social media platforms.

July 31, 2020

Law was listed as wanted by Hong Kong police on suspicion of inciting secession and colluding with foreign or overseas forces to endanger national security under the National Security Law; he later fled to the United Kingdom.

June 4, 2020

Law and many other local activists attended an illegal assembly in Victoria Park. He and 25 others were arrested and charged with offenses that included inciting others to participate in unauthorized rallies.

2019 -2020

Law met with various high-level US officials, including then-secretary of state Mike Pompeo and US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, to seek foreign intervention in Hong Kong affairs.

April 10, 2016

Law and other activists founded the now-defunct separatist group Demosisto, which advocated “Hong Kong independence”.
