Beijing edges Sichuan, Guangdong smashes Fujian

ZHUJI - Joseph Young contributed a game-high 32 points as the Beijing Royal Fighters edged the Sichuan Blue Whales 109-105, while the Guangdong Southern Tigers smashed the Fujian Sturgeons 125-110 in the 2020-21 Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) league  on Friday.

Beijing put high pressure on Sichuan throughout the whole game. Hamed Haddadi, core player of Sichuan, was forced to make two fouls by Beijing just five minutes after the beginning. Wang Shaojie grabbed 15 points in the first half, whose high accuracy outside also helped Beijing make eight of 13 three-pointers to take a 59-51 lead.

Haddadi strived to fight back for Sichuan in the second half. However, confronted with Wang's powerful steals and slam dunks, his effort only cut the deficit to 83-80 before the final quarter.

Beijing once established a double-digit advantage in the middle of the last period after three three-pointers and Wang's free throws. Though the gap was narrowed later, and the team kept the edge until the end to seal the victory.

Wang contributed 21 points, 11 rebounds and three assists, while his teammate Zhang Fan added 20 points.

Elsewhere, Su Wei's jump throw at the bottom line delivered Guangdong a 10-1 run to end the first quarter 40-29. Zhou Peng's long distance three-pointer enlarged the gap to 20 points, leading Guangdong over Fujian 73-52 to the second half.

With Zhou keeping quick on attack in the third quarter, Guangdong witnessed the margin rise to 32 points. With Guangdong dominating the game, Fujian had no choice but to accept the loss.

Su notched a team-high 27 points for Guangdong, and Zhang Haojia pocketed 24. Both Zhou and Hu Mingxuan added 11. Robert Golden gained a game-high 31 points.
