Brunei holds championship to promote national Esports

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - Brunei launched a three-day national Esports championship on Friday to promote the development of Esports in the sultanate.

The Brunei Esports Championship 2020 is co-organized by the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, and as well as InfoCom Federation Brunei (IFB).

According to IFB President Sheikh Hj Abas, during this three-day tournament more than 500 participants from all over Brunei will compete in four games: Dota 2, Tekken 7, Mobile Legends and PUBG Mobile, covering the mainstream gaming platforms of PC, console and mobile phone

According to IFB President Sheikh Hj Abas, during this three-day tournament more than 500 participants from all over Brunei will compete in four games: Dota 2, Tekken 7, Mobile Legends and PUBG Mobile, covering the mainstream gaming platforms of PC, console and mobile phone.

Sheikh Hj Abas said Esports is now a multi-billion-dollar industry globally, and especially in Southeast Asia, where Esports has become a highly popular sport among the youths.

"The inclusion of Esports at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in Manila is a testament to the immense popularity of Esports in this region, and with Vietnam, next year to include Esports in the upcoming 31st SEA Games proves that Esports is here to stay," Sheikh Hj Abas said.

He said that Brunei also has its own Esports talented players who have been actively competing in tournaments locally and abroad.

"It is hoped that this tournament would drive more youths into competitive gaming and hopefully become the next Bruneian e-athletes competing in the international arena, carrying the Brunei flag," he added.
