HK’s No. 2 official blasts LegCo standstill

Hong Kong’s chief secretary for administration has expressed “extreme indignation and disappointment” over the failure of the Legislative Council in electing a chairman of the House Committee after 16 meetings in more than six months because of “irresponsible” filibustering by the opposition lawmakers.  

In his latest blog, Matthew Cheung Kin-chung wrote on Sunday that some lawmakers were “obviously toying with procedures” with the view to paralyze the legislature and thus impeded the work of the government.

This has caused delay in the scrutiny in the House Committee of many bills relating to economic development and people’s livelihood, he noted. The holdup is hurting all Hong Kong people, he added.  

Pointing out that there is only three months left of the current LegCo term, Cheung said all bills will lapse after that.

The city can’t afford to have unending internal disputes, he said, noting that it is imperative for the LegCo to resume normal operations as soon as possible.
