Hong Kong police defuse wartime bomb

HONG KONG – Hong Kong police have defused a wartime bomb in Happy Valley area of Hong Kong Island in an operation that took about 12 hours.  

No casualties or property losses were reported during the process.

Police said the bomb, found on Saturday noon at a construction site, was left by the US army during World War II. It was about 1.3 meters in length, 0.4 meter in diameter and 1,000 pounds (about 450 kg) in weight.

About 300 residents nearby were evacuated and roads were temporarily closed as the poliWorld War IIce decided to handle the bomb on the spot.

It was not the first time that wartime bombs were found in Hong Kong, which was occupied by Japan between 1941 and 1945. In 2014, an AN-M66 bomb of the US army weighing more than 900 kg was discovered also in Happy Valley.
