Spanish striker Jimenez renews Penarol deal

MONTEVIDEO - Spanish striker Xisco Jimenez has extended his contract with Penarol until the end of the year, the Uruguayan club said on Wednesday.

Penarol announced on Twitter that Jimenez signed a new deal after both parties exercized an option included in his initial contract last September.

Jimenez scored five goals in 13 Uruguayan first division matches in 2019, having joined the Montevideo outfit from Spain's Osasuna.

The 33-year-old Mallorcan, whose career has included spells at Deportivo La Coruna and Newcastle United, became the first European to play for Penarol since Serb Ilija Petkovic in 1971.

Penarol finished runners up in Uruguay's top flight last year after losing 1-0 to champions Nacional in December's competition decider.

Former Manchester United and Uruguay international striker Diego Forlan was named Penarol's head coach on December 20, replacing Diego Lopez.
