The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region team’s tennis ace Coleman Wong Chak-lam snatched the special administrative region’s historic tennis gold medal in the men’s singles event on Saturday after beating Wu Yibing of China’s national team 2-0 at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
The victory is all but certain to secure a spot for Wong at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
Facing Wu the fourth time, Wong won the first set 6-2. In the second set, the two had, at one stage, tied at 4-4, but Wong secured a break to lead 5-4 and went on to win the set 6-4.

Congratulating Wong, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui said in a social media post his victory gave Hong Kong its eighth gold at the tournament, matching the city’s gold medals tally record set at the Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2023 -- a result she called “heartening”.
According to the International Tennis Federation’s qualification pathways to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, the now world No 100 Asian Games gold medalist could secure an Olympics berth through the regional Games route provided he remains ranked inside the world’s top 500.
