JERUSALEM/GAZA/CAIRO – Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday that Hamas leaders abroad were also targets for Israel, hours after Israel said it had killed the commander of Hamas' northern Gaza brigade in an overnight airstrike.

"Hamas leaders abroad are also in our sights," Katz said in a video statement, adding that Israel would pursue those it holds responsible for the Hamas-led attack on Oct 7, 2023.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Katz said earlier that Izz al-Din al-Bik, commander of Hamas' northern Gaza brigade, had been killed in the Gaza Strip. Palestinian media also reported his death.

Earlier on Tuesday, Netanyahu said Israel was continuing military operations across several fronts, including Gaza and Lebanon, and had killed more than 100 "terrorists" in Gaza in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, two Palestinians were killed in an Israeli strike targeting an apartment in the Al-Nasr neighborhood of western Gaza City, according to Palestinian sources.

Eyewitnesses and Palestinian sources reported that an Israeli aircraft fired several missiles at the apartment, destroying it and setting it ablaze.

The civil defense service in Gaza said in a press statement that its crews managed to extinguish the fire that broke out in the apartment following the strike, while ambulances transported the two deceased individuals and several injured people to al-Shifa Medical complex.

Signs of possible attack ahead of election

Speaking in a video statement from Tel Nof air base, south of Tel Aviv, Netanyahu said there were indications that Israel's enemies could try to carry out an attack ahead of the country's Oct 27 election.

"There are signs that ahead of the elections our enemies will try to attack us," Netanyahu said. He did not specify who might be behind such an attack or provide details of the intelligence.

"Don't mess with us. Our long arm will reach you anywhere and at any time," he warned.

Netanyahu is on a reelection campaign ahead of the Oct 27 elections.

'Two-state solution only path to lasting peace'

Separately, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi said the two-state solution is the only way to achieve lasting peace and stability in the Middle East, reaffirming that peace is Egypt's strategic choice.

Sisi made the remarks during a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, cabinet members, senior officials, experts and specialists at the State Strategic Command Headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.

Sisi stressed that the Palestinian issue remains the central issue in the Middle East and that the failure to resolve it is a cause of instability in the region.
