CHANGZHOU - Top Chinese players Shi Yuqi and Chen Yufei both advanced to the quarterfinals of the badminton China Open on Thursday.

Men's singles top seed Shi progressed for the second consecutive match following an opponent's retirement. He lost the opening game 21-17 to Thailand's Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul before taking the second 21-2.

The Thai player retired with an injury in the deciding game with Shi leading 12-6, sending the world No 1 through to the last eight.

Fellow Chinese player Weng Hongyang also booked a quarterfinal place after battling back to beat Malaysia's Leong Jun Hao 20-22, 21-11, 21-18.

In the women's singles, Chen produced a dramatic comeback against India's P. V. Sindhu. She lost the opening game 21-16 before edging the second 22-20 and taking the decider 21-18 in 89 minutes.

China's second seed Wang Zhiyi cruised past South Korea's Sim Yu-jin 21-16, 21-15.

In the women's doubles, top Chinese pair Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning delivered a dominant performance to beat Chinese Taipei's Hu Ling-fang and Jheng Yu-chieh 21-13, 21-8.

Men's doubles duo Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang maintained their winning run by defeating the South Korean-Malaysian pairing of Choi Sol-gyu and Goh V Shem in straight games.

Chinese mixed doubles pairs recorded mixed results. Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping beat teammates Gao Jiaxuan and Wu Mengying in an all-China clash, while Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi lost 21-15, 21-13 to Japan's Yuta Watanabe and Maya Taguchi.

The quarterfinals will begin on Friday. The 2026 China Open runs through Sunday.
