The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government is making full efforts to provide support for the survivors of the deadly fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po to overcome difficulties and rebuild their long-term homes, an HKSAR government spokesman said on Sunday.

The spokesman said in a statement that there was no need for Wang Fuk Court residents to worry that they will not be able to retrieve their personal belongings remaining in the flats upon transferring titles to the government.

He said government officials are reviewing the last two rounds of arrangements that allowed residents to return to their flats to collect their belongings.

“In considering residents' wish to collect more belongings, the government will make concrete arrangements, having regard to the actual circumstances including the overall condition of the buildings, the safety of residents and working staff, as well as the substantial manpower and logistical support required,” the statement reads.

The HKSAR government also announced earlier a two-year standard rental grant for Wang Fuk Court flat owners until Dec 21, 2027 to help them rebuild their long-term homes with greater flexibility.

Regardless of which long-term housing arrangement option the owners have chosen — whether they have successfully selected a flat, or even if they do not participate in the long-term housing arrangements — they will receive a rental grant totaling HK$300,000 ($38,300) over two years from Dec 22, 2025 to Dec 21, 2027.

If owners opt to join the Special Sales Exercise, their eligibility for the rental grant will only cease three months after the date of the assignment of the newly purchased flat, the spokesman added.

Wang Fuk Court residents gathered on Sunday for the first general meeting of flat owners since the devastating blaze on Nov 26 that left 168 dead.
