SHENZHEN – Shenzhen’s urban rail transit network has reached a new milestone with the launch of Metro Line 13 Phase 2’s northern extension, cutting travel time between Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint Station (深圳湾口岸) and Guangmingcheng Station (光明城) to 45 minutes.
The 19.25-kilometer extension, running from Shangwu Station (上屋站) to Lisonglang Station (李松蓢), adds 11 underground stations to the network. With this opening, Shenzhen’s total urban rail transit operational mileage has reached 653.7 km across 452 stations, firmly placing the city among the top five nationwide.
The new section connects with Line 13 Phase 1, forming a 41.69-km north-south corridor linking three districts: Nanshan, Bao'an, and Guangming.
Commuters can now travel between the centers of Guangming and Nanshan districts in 45 minutes, a trip that previously took more than an hour by car during peak hours.
The extension also enables transfers with six existing metro lines — Metro Lines 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, and 11 — significantly improving cross-district travel efficiency for both daily commuters and leisure travelers.
Land and other facilities are reserved for future connections with Dongguan’s Metro Line 5, further supporting integration within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Blending functionality with aesthetics
The new stations on the extension line adopt a design concept that blends functionality with cultural aesthetics.
Fenghuangcheng (凤凰城) Station incorporates phoenix motifs, reflecting the meaning of its Chinese name. Xinzhuang Station (新庄) features a sci-fi, starlit-sky theme, with gradient blue-purple, starry canopies designed to evoke the flow of the Milky Way. Hong'ao Park Station (红坳公园) uses warm wood tones integrated with traditional Chinese architectural aesthetics.
