Zelensky: US mediated talks with Russia need to be organized before winter

EVIAN/MOSCOW/KYIV – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said here on Tuesday that it is "very important" that the next US-mediated talks with Russia should take place before this winter.

The location and format of the negotiations would be decided by US President Donald Trump, Zelensky said in an interview on the sidelines of the G7 Summit held in Evian, France.

Speaking to reporters after attending a G7 Summit working session over the Ukrainian crisis, Trump urged Russia and Ukraine to make peace. "I'm gonna do whatever I can," he said, adding, "Russia should make a deal" to end the war in Ukraine.

Zelensky was also invited to the session. He has talked with Trump on the sidelines of the meeting.

Trump confirms meeting Ukraine's Zelensky at G7 summit

US President Donald Trump confirmed his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the G7 summit in France on Tuesday, saying that "Russia should make a deal" to end the war in Ukraine.

Trump said more talks on the Ukraine conflict were planned later in the day as resolutions to end the over four years of war are on top of the G7 summit agenda.

The summit kicked off on Monday in Evian, a town on the shores of Lake Geneva in eastern France.  

'No official communication channels'

There are currently no official communication channels between Moscow and Kyiv, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday.

"As you are aware, there are no official channels between Moscow and Kyiv," he told reporters at a press briefing, responding to a question on whether Russia had received an official invitation for a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the G7 summit.

"For Zelensky's information, President (Vladimir) Putin has already laid out all positions and proposals," Peskov said. "It has been stated and reiterated multiple times that if Zelensky is prepared to engage in responsible and serious talks, the Kyiv authorities know full well what these talks should cover, he may travel to Moscow at any time."

'Railway terror attack foiled'

Russian security forces have arrested a man in the Yaroslavl region who was allegedly preparing a terrorist attack on railway infrastructure at the behest of Ukrainian intelligence services, local media reported Tuesday.

The suspect was caught red-handed while attempting to plant a homemade explosive device on a railway facility, the regional press office of the Yaroslavl Directorate under the Federal Security Service (FSB) was cited as saying.

The suspect, a resident of Rybinsk city born in 2003, had been under long-term operational surveillance by security officials. The FSB said it had documented several instances of illegal activity by the suspect targeting both energy and transport infrastructure.

Following the arrest, the investigative department of the FSB in Yaroslavl opened a criminal case against the suspect on charges of attempted terrorism.  

2 pilots killed in Su-24M bomber crash

A Su-24M frontline bomber of the 7th Petro Franko Tactical Aviation Brigade crashed on Tuesday in western Ukraine, killing two pilots, the Ukrainian Air Force said.

The aircraft went down at around 7 pm local time while carrying out a mission in the Khmelnytskyi region, the military said in a statement.

According to preliminary information, no civilian casualties were reported.

Rescue workers and law enforcement officers are working at the crash site. The cause and the circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
