The Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on Monday congratulated the SAR on the successful conclusion of its 2025 Legislative Council general election, in which 90 new lawmakers were elected.

A spokesperson from the liaison office stated that the successful election is of particular significance as Hong Kong recovers and rebuilds following the recent Tai Po fire.

The poll marks another step in putting “patriots administering Hong Kong” into full implementation, while also advancing the formation of high-quality democracy that empowers high-quality development in the SAR, the liaison office stated.

It also demonstrated the institutional strengths of the “one country, two systems” principle and a retooled electoral system grounded in the patriots-only principle, it added.

The liaison office observed that all 161 candidates took their campaigns to their communities and sectors, gauged public needs, and addressed concerns.

It pointed to more than 90 government-led election forums, which saw candidates contend on the grounds of their policy platforms, expertise, and performance records, creating what the spokesperson called a “principled, issue-focused, and constructive” electoral climate.

Looking ahead, the spokesperson cited a Chinese proverb — “A true gentleman must be broad-minded and strong-willed, for his burden is heavy and his road long” — to underscore the expectation of perseverance and dedication from the newly elected lawmakers in their service.

The new-term LegCo council must grasp the key opportunities under the country’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), helping Hong Kong better integrate into and serve the nation’s development agenda, it said.

This will, in turn, enable the city to make a more substantial contribution to the country’s modernization and the cause of national rejuvenation, it added.
