By Wang Zhan in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Observatory said it will raise the typhoon warning signal No 1 on Monday as Super Typhoon Fung-wong was expected to skirt within 400 kilometers of the city before moving towards the vicinity of Taiwan region.

The observatory said it will issue the Standby Signal, No. 1 after noontime tomorrow when Fung-wong comes within 800 kilometers of Hong Kong.

“It will be closest to Hong Kong on Wednesday, skirting at about 400 kilometers east of Hong Kong. Local winds will strengthen later on Tuesday to Wednesday,” the observatory said.

“Depending on the intensity change of Fung-wong, its distance from Hong Kong and the local wind conditions, the observatory will assess the need of issuing higher tropical cyclone warning signals on Tuesday,” it added.

Fung-wong intensified into a super typhoon on Sunday, packing sustained winds of 185 kph near its center. Around noontime, Fung-wong was centered about 310 kilometers east of Manila.

It was forecast to slam into central Luzon on Sunday night and weaken into a severe typhoon when it enters the South China Sea on Monday morning.

Fung-wong was expected to move northwards towards the vicinity of Taiwan region, and weaken gradually under the influence of the northeast monsoon, the observatory said.

Under the combined effect of Fung-wong and the northeast monsoon, it will be windy and slightly cooler with swells over the coast of Guangdong in the next few days, the HKO added.

The observatory said temperatures in the urban areas will fall to around 20 degrees Celsius in middle of this week and minor flooding may occur over some coastal low-lying areas overnight on Monday to the small hours of Tuesday.

The observatory also said that weather in Hong Kong was expected to be hot and dry with sunny periods on Sunday afternoon before turning cloudy tonight.
