The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region recorded over 1.16 million visitor arrivals from the Chinese mainland during the first six days of this year’s National Day Golden Week holiday, according to the SAR government's Immigration Department.

Immigration data showed that that mainland tourists made 1,164,000 passenger trips to the territory from Oct 1 to Oct 6, up nearly 5 percent year-on-year.

The city also recorded during the same period over 182,800 overseas tourist arrivals, an increase of over 25 percent from last year.

Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po said earlier that mainland’s eight-day National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival “golden week” was fueling Hong Kong’s tourism boom.

He said the SAR’s efforts to boost its mega-events economy continued to pay off even as traditional and signature attractions like the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance and the National Day fireworks display remained very popular with tourists.
