The Hong Kong Immigration Department has introduced specialized facial recognition gates at four major border points, allowing an estimated 5,000 15th National Games participants to clear immigration in seven seconds.
The initiative, which went live on Sunday, came with 16 exclusive self-service channels across four key ports: the Hong Kong International Airport, West Kowloon High-Speed Rail Station, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, and Shenzhen Bay Port.
Speaking at a pep-rally ceremony organized by the Immigration Department on Monday, Director of Immigration Benson Kwok Joon-fung said the system allows registered participants — including athletes and relevant staff members — to complete immigration procedures in just seven seconds without the need to present physical documents, marking the first time Hong Kong has fully adopted facial recognition technology for border clearance.

Each of the four ports will be equipped with two outbound and two inbound channels converted from existing facilities. After completing one normal immigration procedure in these designated lanes, accredited personnel will be able to utilize facial recognition systems for subsequent border crossings.
Local athletes may also access these channels.
Kwok also stressed the government’s commitment to ensuring “orderly, safe, and smooth” operations during the event, adding that there will be a high volume of athletes and staff traveling between Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao.
He expressed confidence that a seamless and secure experience will be delivered, with border control points implementing optimized staffing arrangements to accommodate spectators.

In a display of versatility, 10 Immigration Department officers will compete in sports events at the Games, including hockey, basketball, and canoeing, while over 180 active and retired staff have joined the volunteer team to showcase Hong Kong’s hospitality.
