Australia’s government is optimistic it can achieve its renewable-generation target by 2030 but isn’t ready to make forecasts beyond that, according to Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen.

Bowen told ABC’s The Insiders Sunday in Sydney he is confident the target of wind, solar and other renewable sources making up 82 percent of electricity generation within five years will be reached.

“We’re making good progress but I’m not here putting my feet on the desk saying that’s done,” he said. “It remains an ongoing challenge.”

Last week, the government pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions within a range of 62 percent to 70 percent by 2035, achieved by a continued roll-out of renewables, fresh transmission infrastructure and boosting clean fuel usage. The Climate Change Authority suggested the renewables target had to rise to 90 percent by 2035 if Australia was to achieve those emission-reduction ambitions.

Bowen wouldn’t commit to any 2035 target, saying progress beyond 2030 will be informed by advice.

“When you get to a number like 82 percent and then to continue to go after that, you’ve got to keep working,” he said. “The low-hanging fruit disappears.”

Bowen said the government is making good progress at encouraging more wind power, rooftop solar and battery installations. It also wants to encourage more electric vehicle use, including expanding EV charging infrastructure.

The government doesn’t have an EV sales target, he said.

“The market will drive a lot of behavior” as manufacturers withdraw internal combustion engines, he said. “I want to see high take-up but we’re not about mandating a particular sales level because I think Australians should make that choice.”
