The organizing committee of the 15th National Games on Tuesday unveiled the designs of the gold, silver and bronze medals that athletes will vie for during the premier sports event, with tickets sales set to begin in August.

The medals are named Tongxinyue — meaning “united leaps” — which symbolizes the collaborative spirit and development pulse of the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, and Guangdong province.

The trio will jointly host the 15th National Games, and the combined 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games, respectively, in November and December.

Each medal for the 34 competition events, weighing 354.5 grams, features the National Games’ emblem on the front. The emblem is composed of three intertwined petals from the representative flowers of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao — cotton tree, bauhinia and lotus. The emblem is set above a peony, China’s national flower, implying that the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) is thriving with the strong support of the motherland. The reverse side of the medal depicts the national sports meet’s mascot, a cartoon character inspired by the Chinese white dolphin.

The medals for the 23 mass participant events are lighter, weighing 232 grams, and also display the games’ emblem on the front. Instead of a peony, its front is engraved with the words National Games. The medals’ reverse side also includes the mascot, along with a quote from former Chinese leader Mao Zedong: “Fa Zhan Ti Yu Yun Dong, Zeng Qiang Ren Min Ti Zhi”, which literally means “develop sports activities and strengthen the people's physique”.

All medals feature a red ribbon attached to a clasp designed in the shape of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB), which embodies the three regions’ unity and connectivity. The medals’ outer ring features 66 grooves to commemorate the 66th anniversary of the first National Games in 1959.

Scheduled to run from Nov 9 to 21, the National Games mark the first time that Hong Kong, Macao and Guangdong will co-host a national-level sports meet.

Hong Kong will stage eight competitive events - men’s U22 basketball, fencing, golf, rugby sevens, triathlon, track cycling and beach volleyball, plus one mass participation event in bowling. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government has estimated that the events will attract over 100,000 spectators from all over the country and beyond.

Yeung Tak-keung, head of the National Games Coordination Office of the Hong Kong SAR, told a radio program on Tuesday that ticket sales for the National Games will kick off in August, and Hong Kong, Macao and Guangdong will use the same ticketing platform to provide a more convenient experience.

“Unlike the Olympics, which require earlier bookings for international travelers, our three-month pre-sale period aligns with domestic spectators’ needs,” Yeung said, expressing confidence in cross-border logistics after positive feedback from the completed test events on Hong Kong’s cycling and marathon routes.
