TOKYO - Japan is considering offering subsidies for the construction of Tesla electric vehicle (EV) charging stations as part of ongoing tariff negotiations with the United States, local media reported.

According to a report by broadcaster TBS on Saturday, the move comes after US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has raised concerns regarding Japan's subsidy policy and is requesting improvements be made to include Tesla's Supercharger network in these subsidies.

Currently, the Japanese government provides subsidies exclusively for the installation of EV charging stations using the CHAdeMO standard, which was developed in Japan.

While Tesla EVs can plug into CHAdeMO-compliant charging points by using a special adapter, CHAdeMO vehicles are not compatible with Tesla Superchargers.

Japan and the US are making arrangements for a third round of tariff talks and Japanese lead negotiator Ryosei Akazawa is expected to travel to Washington next week, the report said.
