Entrepreneurs from Macao and the Chinese mainland said on Monday that the deeper integration within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) has opened up broader partnerships and institutional innovation through cross-border cooperation.

Speaking to journalists attending a media tour aimed at studying opportunities within the Greater Bay Area, Nick Ng Hung-kei, executive director of the Macao-based tech firm BoardWareIntelligence Technology Ltd — the first technology company awarded the Medal of Merit for Industry and Commerce by the SAR government — explained how his business has been thriving thanks to the 11-city cluster’s industrial development.

Since 2016, the company has been enhancing its collaborations with Chinese mainland tech giants like Huawei and Alibaba. “Their technological capabilities and services are now globally competitive,” said Ng.

The Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin has been pivotal in fostering ties, enabling BoardWare to partner with mainland scientific research institutions to establish joint labs and contribute to landmark projects, such as the one-stop joint services lanes for vehicles at the Hengqin port, Ng said.

Ng outlined Macao’s “dual-platform” role in facilitating mainland enterprises' expansion into global markets, particularly Portuguese-speaking countries, while also serving as a platform for cross-border technology integration.

Amid escalating global trade tensions, Vicky Chen, director of Corporate Communications from BoardWare, said the company remains confident of its ability to weather these challenges through the momentum provided by the development of the Greater Bay Area.

“We've been proactively preparing through multiple strategic initiatives,” Chen said, adding that the SAR’s unique strengths can formulate the “Macao solution” to help Chinese technology navigate global markets.

The Guangzhou Pharmaceuticals Co Ltd also views Macao as an innovation hub for its global expansion. Representatives from the medicine maker briefed reporters that its operation in Macao is fundamentally about pioneering innovation and value-added research, rather than mass production.

The pharmaceutical giant stated that Macao’s international connectivity and policy initiatives are conducive to the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) industry’s globalization, adding that complementary industrial advantages across the Greater Bay Area cities could also amplify the competitiveness of TCM products.
