HKO: Expect heavier showers on Friday, stormy weekend

HONG KONG – Hong Kong residents can expect heavier showers at times on Friday and a stormy weekend ahead as a trough of low pressure continued to bring unsettled weather over Guangdong, the Hong Kong Observatory said Thursday.

In an advisory, the Observatory said there will be heavy showers and squally thunderstorms over the region in the next couple of days. More than 10 millimeters of rainfall were recorded over parts of the territory on Thursday, and rainfall even exceeded 30 millimeters over Sai Kung, Sha Tin and Tsuen Wan districts.

“Showers will be heavier at times tomorrow. There will still be showers and thunderstorms over the weekend,” the Observatory said.

It raised in the Thunderstorm Warning over the city on Thursday that lasted from 8:15 am until 1:35 pm. A second Thunderstorm Warning was hoisted at 3:45 pm and which lasted until around 5 pm.

The Observatory also had to issue the Amber Storm Warning Signal--which means heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall over the city, exceeding 30 millimeters an hour--thrice this week due to the inclement weather.

It said the trough of low pressure is expected to weaken early next week but another one is expected to form over the central Chinese mainland and edge closer to the southern coast midweek next week.

Also on Thursday, some high-speed trains between Hong Kong and Guangzhou were cancelled or diverted to a different station due to bad weather.

The mainland railway authority announced on Thursday morning that it has adjusted some trains running between Hong Kong West Kowloon and Guangzhounan railway stations due to adverse weather.

Trains bound for Hong Kong from Guangzhounan, namely G6527, G6515, G6529, G6535, were cancelled on Thursday, while G6528, G6516, G6530, G6536, from Hong Kong to Guangzhounan were also cut. Passengers can apply for a refund within 30 days.

Trains G6510 and G6511, originally scheduled to run between Hong Kong and Guangzhounan, were changed to travel between West Kowloon station and Shenzhenbei station.

The authorities advised travelers to consider taking the MTR’s East Rail Line, a route connecting Hong Kong’s downtown with Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau Spur Line land crossings, or other cross-boundary transportation.
