NPP fields 29 members to run for District Council election

TheNew People’s Party announced on Friday that 29 members will run for the 2023 District Council Ordinary Election, including an incumbent district councilor and a candidate of Indian origin.

According to Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee, chairperson of the NPP, the party will field 17 in District Council geographical constituencies, and 12 members in District Committees constituencies. The average age of the 29 candidates is 37 years old, with the youngest being 24 and the oldest being 47.

Eighty-six percent of the candidates have a higher education degree, and 38 percent have a master's degree or above. 

Ip described the candidates as young, highly educated, and with a genuine love for Hong Kong and the country, and added that they will be wholeheartedly committed to serving the community

The candidates also include a representative who can speak for ethnic minorities. She is confident that the candidates will garner enough nominations.

She pointed out that there are new constituencies in this election, and that the size of the constituencies is, on average, 10 times larger than before. She said she hopes that the government will intensify its promotional efforts.

She also emphasized the importance of aligning the ideology of the New People's Party with the candidates, enabling voters to choose candidates who best represent their values.

Ip said she hopes the policy platforms of the New People's Party will be appeal to voters.

She called on voters to cast their votes on Dec 10, and to choose candidates who combine talent with integrity and can demonstrate true dedication to serving the needs of residents.

As of 5 pm on Thursday, 179 candidates for this year’s District Council election have submitted registration forms since the start of the nomination period on Oct 17. The nomination period will continue until Oct 30.
