HONG KONG - The Office of the Commissioner of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on Thursday strongly opposed an attempt by some US politicians to take so-called coordinated actions to meddle with Hong Kong affairs.

A spokesperson for the Commissioner's Office said the office strongly disapproved and firmly rejected the letter of the chairs of the US Congressional-Executive Commission on China, Representative Chris Smith and Senator Jeff Merkley, to the British prime minister, which calls for UK-US coordination of actions on Hong Kong issues to pressure China.

Since the implementation of the national security law in Hong Kong, Hong Kong society has returned to normal, the lawful rights and freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kong residents have been better protected, and Hong Kong enjoys bright prospects for development, said the spokesperson.

However, a few American politicians are obsessed with interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs, and try to intimidate China by wielding sanction sticks. Their botched trick of "using Hong Kong to contain China" has long been seen through, said the spokesperson.

The letter also attacks the rule of law in Hong Kong by hyping the Jimmy Lai case. The spokesperson said that Hong Kong is a society governed by the rule of law where laws must be abided by and lawbreakers held accountable.

During the 2019 turbulence, anti-China force Lai incited violence and openly said he was "fighting for the United States," and the facts of his suspicion of violating the national security law in Hong Kong are clear, said the spokesperson.

Noting that the handling of the Lai case by the HKSAR complies with laws and will help safeguard the rule of law in Hong Kong, the spokesperson said it has nothing to do with freedom of the press and speech, and brooks no foreign interference.

A few American politicians have frequently poked their noses into the Lai case under the pretext of freedom of the press, and now even attempt to coordinate with allies to pressure China, which will only prove to be another flop, said the spokesperson.

The spokesperson stressed that Hong Kong is part of China, the historical process of righting wrongs in Hong Kong is unstoppable, and all foreign interference and smearing will come a cropper.

The office urged the relevant institutions and politicians of the US Congress to recognize the facts, abide by international law and basic norms governing international relations, and immediately stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs by piecing together small blocs.

The HKSAR government on Thursday also expressed strong opposition toward the letter which interferes in judicial proceedings of the HKSAR in the court case involving Lai.

It vehemently condemned the US politicians' attempt to procure the imposition of so-called "sanctions" on judicial officers and prosecutors who have been discharging their duties of administration of justice independently and impartially.

The HKSAR government strongly objected to the purely politically oriented remarks of the US politicians. A spokesperson for the HKSAR government said that making a statement with the intent to interfere with or obstruct the course of justice, or engaging in conduct with the same intent, may even constitute the offence of criminal contempt of court or the offence of perverting the course of justice.

The spokesperson said that pursuant to Article 63 of the Basic Law of the HKSAR, the Department of Justice of the HKSAR government controls criminal prosecutions, free from any interference.

The spokesperson stressed that Hong Kong is a society underpinned by the rule of law and has always adhered to the principle that laws must be obeyed and lawbreakers held accountable. Hong Kong's judicial system has always been highly regarded by international communities.

The spokesperson said that safeguarding national security falls within the internal affairs of a sovereign jurisdiction, and hence the implementation of the national security law in Hong Kong in the HKSAR should be free from any form of interference.

The US politicians' arbitrary and unreasonable bullying act has seriously violated international norms and grossly interfered in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs at large. It is a blatant attempt to undermine the rule of law of Hong Kong and will only expose their own weakness and be doomed to fail, the spokesperson said.
