Anti-COVID-19 groups, industry leaders awarded in HK

A number of individuals and social groups were awarded on Friday for their contributions in Hong Kong’s fight against the fifth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and other efforts to spread warm and positive energy in society.

The awards ceremony was hosted by the Hong Kong Ta Kung Wen Wei Media Group, with the support of the department of Youth Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Over 100 social dignitaries attended the event.

Five groups and seven individuals received awards. Among the group winners were the Anti-epidemic Task Force of the Security Bureau, Hong Kong Baptist University Chinese Medicine Team Against COVID-19, and Hong Kong Volunteers Against Coronavirus, which were recognized for their contributions in managing quarantine facilities, providing traditional Chinese medicine consultation services, and distributing medicines and materials to the community respectively during the fifth wave of the pandemic.

The cross-disciplinary osteogenesis imperfecta treatment center at the the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital was also honored for its pioneering role in the treatment of this orthopedics disease, which can result in easily broken bones.

A group of TV production employees from Television Broadcasts Ltd also got the award, for documenting China’s unprecedented achievements of poverty alleviation in the TV documentary No Poverty Land.

A special tribute award was presented to the mainland medical workers who came to Hong Kong to support the city’s combat against the fifth wave of the pandemic early this year.

In a video speech, Zhang Zhongde, deputy head of the mainland medical support team, said that by working side by side, the mainland medical workers have forged a deep friendship with their Hong Kong counterparts.

Zhang said the motherland will always be the strongest backing for Hong Kong to overcome the pandemic and other challenges. He added that if there is a need, mainland medical workers will do their utmost to support Hong Kong again.

Chan Ching-chuen, a Hong Kong member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Asia’s “father of electric vehicles”, was one of the seven award-winning individuals.

In addition to his achievement in engineering technology, Chan also helped Hong Kong’s scientific advancement make huge strides forward by writing an open letter to President Xi Jinping in 2017 with 23 other local scientists, calling attention to the restrictions and bottlenecks affecting Hong Kong’s science development. Xi responded to the letter, and the central government also launched a series of groundbreaking policies to pave the way for deeper cross-border scientific collaboration.

Other individual awardees include Lily Chiu Lee-lee, operations director of China State Construction International Medical Industry Development Corp Ltd, tasked with building community isolation facilities in the pandemic; and Willy Fu Kin-chi, a local legal expert who actively helped the public understand the meaning of “one country, two systems” amid the 2019 social unrest.

Also on the list were a female general building supervisor at the Shek Lei Estate, a male blood donor who keeps the city’s blood donation, and two young Hong Kong entrepreneurs.

The award, established in 2021, is designed to honor the city’s spirit of mutual help, care and harmony. This year, the award has become part of the celebrations to mark the city’s 25th anniversary of returning to the motherland.
