Hong Kong youngsters, with international vision and an upbringing influenced by the culture of both East and the West, stand to reap unlimited opportunities from the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, senior Chinese diplomat Liu Guangyuan said on Thursday.

Speaking at the first Belt and Road Youth Development Summit, Liu, commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, called on the city’s young people to be the bridge to enhance people-to-people bonding with countries taking part in the initiative.

They can also leverage Hong Kong’s advantages as a link between the motherland and the world to explore more opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship, Liu said.

Themed at implementing the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and leveraging the role of Hong Kong to facilitate the development of the initiative and the ‘dual circulation’ economic strategy, the summit is co-organized by the Belt and Road General Chamber of Commerce and the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the HKSAR.

In a speech at the same event, Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan Kwok-ki said construction of the initiative is an important entry point for the Hong Kong SAR government to enable young people to develop a correct view of the overall situation and make contributions to the development of the country and the world.

He said the HKSAR government will publish the first edition of the Youth Development Blueprint at the end of this year to outline its principles, objectives and actions in pursuing development of young people.

The SAR government will also set up a steering group on integration into national development, to be chaired by the chief executive, with three secretaries of departments as deputies. One of its goals is to promote the financial services and other collaboration amid high-quality development of the initiative, as well as deepening Hong Kong’s ties with the Chinese mainland, Chan said.
