But the opener was scored with the next action at the other end of the pitch as Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel slipped and fell, allowing Haberer to break the deadlock.

Dortmund were shocked and couldn't respond whereas the hosts clinically doubled their advantage in the 21st minute through Haberer, who sealed his brace after drilling Jordan Siebatcheu's lay-up from the edge of the box past a hapless Kobel into the bottom corner.

Edin Terzic's men pressed forward but lacked in ideas to threaten Union Berlin's well positioned defence.

Dortmund increased the pressure after the restart, but Union kept the visitors at bay for most of the time.

After the defeat, Dortmund now sit seven points adrift of frontrunners Union.

"We know Union and we know they are a tough opponent. You cannot give away goals here. If you are behind two goals against Union, it is nearly impossible to get back. The defeat is annoying and of course disappointing," said Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic.

"Amazing performance. What can I say. We also had stages where we had to suffer and rely on our goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow, who was there when we needed him. It is great to look at the table, but it is just snapshot in time," said Union Berlin head coach Urs Fischer.
