Nepali president tests positive for COVID-19

HANOI / MANILA / SINGAPORE / KATHMANDU / WELLINGTON / KUALA LUMPUR / SEOUL / NEW DELHI / ISLAMABAD - Nepali President Bidya Devi Bhandari, who had been undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital of Kathmandu, tested positive for COVID-19, a hospital official said on Sunday.

The president, who was admitted to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital on Saturday, tested positive for COVID-19 in a PCR test, said Dr. Dinesh Kafle, executive director of the hospital.

"She was admitted to the hospital following a high fever, cough, headache and body ache," Kafle told Xinhua. "On Sunday afternoon, she didn't have a fever but a dry cough. However, she is feeling better."

According to Kafle, the president may need medical attention for a few more days at the hospital. "As she has been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, we are hopeful that no serious complication will arise in her health."

Tika Dhakal, a media expert at the Office of the President, told Xinhua that the president had also undergone tests for dengue and seasonal flu but the reports were negative.

"Her health has much improved on Sunday compared with Saturday," Dhakal said.

The total confirmed active COVID-19 cases in Nepal stood at 570 by Sunday, according to the Ministry of Health and Population.

India

India on Monday reported 2,424 new COVID-19 cases for the past 24 hours, bringing the total tally to 44,614,437.

According to health ministry data released on Monday morning, with the reporting of the fresh cases, India's active caseload currently stands at 28,079.

The South Asian country also logged 15 new COVID-19 related deaths in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 528,814.

Malaysia

Malaysia recorded 1,453 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight Sunday, bringing the total tally to 4,854,976, according to the health ministry.

There were eight new imported cases and 1,445 local transmissions, data released by the ministry showed.

Two new deaths were reported from the pandemic, lifting the death toll to 36,400.

New Zealand

New Zealand recorded 9,405 new community cases of COVID-19 and 25 more deaths from the pandemic over the past week, the country's Ministry of Health said on Monday.

On average, new cases per day reached 1,598 in last week. The country has seen the number of daily cases going down steadily from over 10,000 cases nationwide in early July.

With the fresh cases, New Zealand has recorded 1,800,602 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 2,055 COVID-19-related deaths since the pandemic hit the country in early 2020, the ministry said.

Pakistan

Pakistan reported 55 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, the Ministry of Health said on Monday.

The overall tally of infected people increased to 1,573,081 after adding the new cases, according to data released by the ministry.

A total of 30,620 people had died of COVID-19 in Pakistan, with no new deaths reported in the country during the last 24 hours, according to the ministry.

Philippines

The Philippines reported 2,097 new COVID-19 infections on Sunday, bringing the number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 3,967,861.

The Department of Health said the number of active cases decreased to 26,357, while 34 more patients died from COVID-19 complications, pushing the country's death toll to 63,264.

Metro Manila, the capital region with over 13 million people, tallied 790 new cases. The DOH said Metro Manila is still the top region with the most COVID-19 cases at 1,277,853, followed by the two areas adjacent to the capital.

Singapore

Singapore reported 4,795 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, bringing the total tally to 1,953,197.

Of the new cases, 476 were detected through PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests and 4,319 through ARTs (antigen rapid test), according to statistics released by the country's Ministry of Health.

Among the PCR cases, 465 were local transmissions and 11 were imported cases. Among the ART cases with mild symptoms and assessed to be of low risk, there were 4,218 local transmissions and 101 imported cases.

No new death from COVID-19 was reported on Sunday, making the total death toll stay unchanged at 1,629.

South Korea

South Korea reported 8,981 new COVID-19 cases as of midnight Sunday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 24,979,770, the health authorities said on Monday.

The daily caseload was down from 17,654 in the previous day and lower than the 12,142 cases tallied a week earlier, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency.

For the past week, the daily average number of confirmed cases was 21,164.

Among the new cases, 47 were imported from overseas, lifting the total to 68,361.

Twenty-three more deaths were confirmed, leaving the death toll at 28,698. The total fatality rate was 0.11 percent.

Vietnam

Vietnam recorded 371 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, down by 311 from Saturday, according to its ministry of health.

All the new cases were locally transmitted, said the ministry.

The newly reported infections brought the total tally to 11,486,414. The country reported no new deaths from the pandemic on Sunday, with the total fatalities staying at 43,153.
