Chinese paddlers claim four titles at WTT Contender Muscat

BEIJING - Chinese paddlers claimed four titles at the WTT Contender Muscat on Saturday, with women's singles winner Chen Xingtong securing the final spot in the Chinese team to compete at the upcoming Chengdu 2022 World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals.

Facing South Korean paddler Choi Hyo-joo in the final, Chen took the first three games 11-8, 11-2, 11-8, before overcoming a 4-8 deficit in the fourth game to secure her title 11-9.

With her latest championship in Muscat, Chen became the final Chinese paddler to get a ticket for the Chengdu 2022 table tennis worlds according to the selection methods unveiled by the Chinese Table Tennis Association (CTTA).

The other four Chinese women's paddlers to play at the team worlds are Sun Yingsha, Chen Meng, Wang Manyu and Wang Yidi, who have secured their berths through world rankings.

Chen later added the women's doubles championship under her belt as she paired with Qian Tianyi to get past Slovakia's Barbora Balazova/Lily Zhang of the United States in straight games.

Chen clinched her first title in Muscat on Friday after pairing with Liu Yebo to dispatch teammates Xu Haidong and Wu Yangchen 3-1 in the mixed doubles final.

The men's doubles final pitted China's Niu Guankai and Sai Linwei against Lee Sang-su and An Jae-hyun of South Korea, where Niu and Sai came out winning 3-0.

Liang Yanning was China's biggest surprise in the men's singles with his stunning victories over second-seeded Patrick Franziska, another German Benedikt Duda, Sweden's Jon Persson and Chinese Taipei veteran Chuang Chih-Yuan on his way to the final.

Liang and Jang Woo-jin of South Korea dragged the final into a decider before Jang emerged victorious 11-4.

Olympic champion Ma Long, world No. 1 Fan Zhendong will represent China in the men's team competition in Chengdu along with Liang Jingkun, Wang Chuqin and Lin Gaoyuan.
