HONG KONG - A British naval mine from World War II was detoxnoted underwater by the Hong Kong Police Force in a controlled explosion east of Shek O, Hong Kong Island, at 1 pm on Friday.
The mine measured 1 meter by 1.5 meters, weighed about 1 metric ton, and was loaded with about 227 kilograms of high explosives. It was reported to the authorities by a civilian diver on Aug 9, and police decided to remove it to minimize its impact on the marine environment.
