Hong Kong political heavyweights on Friday said that President Xi Jinping’s important speech put Hong Kong’s future at ease as the “one country, two systems” principle, which gives the city its uniqueness, is here to stay.

Addressing a meeting celebrating the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland and the inaugural ceremony of the sixth-term government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Xi praised Hong Kong’s irreplaceable contribution to the motherland as he iterated the success of “one country, two systems”.

Addressing a meeting celebrating the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland and the inaugural ceremony of the sixth-term government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, President Xi Jinping praised Hong Kong’s irreplaceable contribution to the motherland as he iterated the success of “one country, two systems”

Xi stressed the need to implement fully and faithfully the “one country, two systems” policy, saying the success of the practice had been recognized, that there is no reason to change such a good system and that it must be adhered to over the long run.

After Xi’s speech, Lau Siu-kai, vice-president of the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macao Studies, said Xi’s speech was made to reassure Hong Kong and the world that “one country, two systems”, as a successful system, will be adhered to in the long run unswervingly.

Lau said the president also pointed out that the goal of “one country, two systems” is to serve the fundamental interests of the country and the HKSAR. It requires Hong Kong people to strengthen their national identity, respect the constitutional order under the Constitution and the HKSAR’s Basic Law and refrain from engaging in activities that endanger national security, he added.

The Liberal Party said it believed Xi’s reaffirmation that “there is no reason to change ‘one country, two systems’” on the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland provided a shot in the arm for the future development of the HKSAR and relieved some people’s doubts about the city’s future.

The Liberal Party also expressed its gratitude to the central government, as it has always upheld and protected the uniqueness of the HKSAR.

The party said it was confident that the city would make significant contributions to the country as long as it could fully use its advantages under “one country, two systems”, consolidate its status as an international financial, shipping, and trade center, and maintain the common law system.

Hong Kong lawmaker Edward Leung Hei said that Xi’s visit to Hong Kong showed the central government’s confidence in HKSAR’s anti-pandemic efforts, which gave him hope that Hong Kong could resume quarantine-free travel with the Chinese mainland under the leadership of the new-term government.

Leung, who was also encouraged by Xi’s concern for young people, expressed the hope that the new-term government would formulate satisfactory youth policies and Hong Kong youths could seize the opportunity to live up to Xi’s expectations.
